HOUSING FOR SURFERS

Wind and Sand. The aim of the proposal is to work with these two materials to construct a sensible intervention which responds to the main concerns of the proposal: Incresing population during water sports seasons and the preservation of the coastal ecosystem. Both issues coalesce in one particular geograpical spot: Valdevaqueros beach.

Time. The seasonal use and the mobility of the sea lovers demands removability or another use for the project.

The proposal tries to bring in the time as an actual design element. Wind predominance percentage through time gives us the right time to start building, to shelter from the east, to open to the west and to adapt when kitesurf competitions are celebrated.

The proposal is located in an unstable ecosystem, and aims to improve an already existing vernacular intervention in the nature. By doing so, almost no footprint is left after the intervention. Sheltered from west wind, this beach is known for being the best location for windsurfers and kitesurfers. There is also a sort of a "bonus track" for this specific spot, a magnificent view of the village and Africa.

The concern for the preservation of the dunar system in Valdevaqueros started in the 1930’s and has developed very little. This has let the dune grow towards the forest and even cross the road. Since the design of the sand containing element has been proved as not very effective, an upgrade to the containg system seemed the most sensible starting point for the proposal for this specific location. As the program demanded for 100 shelters for sport lovers, the definition of the shelter and its variations is a focal issue. Therefore, several smithsonian issues guided its design:

-Can it adapt itself to various ways of living?

-Can the individual add identity to this house or is the architecture packaging him?

-Is there a decently-large open-air sunlit space opening directly from the living area of the house?

-Can the extensions of the dwelling be appreciated from inside?

-Is there enough storage?

-Can the houses be put together in such a way as to contribute something to each other?
